Our first Basenji, purchased from Melody Russell, had earned 9 points and had produced one litter when the newly developed test for Hemolytic Anemia revealed that Charisma was a carrier, and she was spayed. One clear daughter, however, was bred, producing the lovely Bia of SunDiata. Before she could begin her show career, Bia was hit by a car, and walked with a permanent limp. She was bred once, however, and produced:

Flute was owner-handled to theTop Ten, with 4 Group I placements the same year his littermate, Ch. Pero's Krugerrand, was #1 on the Top Ten. Flute was a true "breeder's dog," lovely type, outstanding movement, gentle and wise temperament, and exceptional health. He produced 13 champions and is on the Stud Dog Honor Roll. He was clear of PPM and produced no known genetic diseases. In 1978, he won Best of Breed under the renowned English breeder judge, Jayne Stringer (Horsley Basenjis) at the Canadian Specialty, and in 1981, he won Best of Breed under Ann Rogers Clark at the Chicagoland Specialty. Flute was the first Basenji to hold titles in all three activities: conformation, obedience, and the new one, lure coursing.

After years of test breeding and linebreeding, we had finally eliminated most all of the deleterious genes and were getting entire litters of healthy, sound, typy, PPM-free Basenjis. The "X" litter, which was a breeding of a half brother and half sister, both sired by Flute, went to the National Specialty, and won the Brood Bitch class for their dam, over the dams of such famous dogs as the No.1 Basenji of the day, Ch. Shadowbye's Mitty. The judge was Basenji breeder Jeraldeen Crandall. Unfortunately, none of this lovely litter finished, as "life intervened," and I was forced to stop showing and breeding. This litter were all placed in pet homes, and the only Basenji I was able to keep was their dam, Syrinx. Although she had 15 points, one major, I was unable to show and finish her. I thought my years "in Basenjis" were over. For "the rest of the story," go to SunDiata Today.
